A fire burned through a two-story, four-unit apartment complex in the Shoreline West neighborhood early Sunday morning, causing extensive damage and smoke inhalation injuries to residents, according to the Mountain View Fire Department.

Dispatchers received a 911 call at 4:32 a.m. on March 3, reporting flames coming from the backside of an apartment building located at the 600 block of Leksich Avenue. When fire crews arrived, they saw flames and smoke billowing from the building. They set up a fire-attack hose line to stop the flames from spreading to other residences, according to the statement.

The fire department called in more crews to help suppress the blaze, elevating the incident to a two-alarm fire. The Palo Alto Fire Department assisted them while fire crews from Santa Clara County, Santa Clara City and Sunnyvale responded to four medical calls, officials said.

All the residents had gotten out safely before firefighters arrived, but a family of four showed signs of smoke inhalation injuries. They had difficulty breathing because of the fire and were transported to a local hospital for evaluation, fire officials said.

The displaced residents received a $250 gift card from the California Professional Firefighters Union, and the apartment building management and American Red Cross also were contacted to help them find temporary housing, fire officials said.

Based on video surveillance, witness statements and a preliminary investigation, officials have determined that the fire started in the laundry room of an apartment on the first floor, although the cause of the fire was not yet known. The estimated damage from the fire was $500,000, according to the statement.

On Feb. 29, another large fire burned down a Monta Loma home that injured one resident.
