A grab-and-go patisserie specializing in crepe cakes with flavors like black sesame, matcha and hojicha will soft open in downtown San Mateo tomorrow, Oct. 2.

Anton SV Pâtisserie has been stacking crepe cakes since its inception in 2016, operating as an online and wholesale confectionery based out of San Jose with pickup points all over the Bay Area. Tomorrow, the patisserie will open its first brick-and-mortar, offering crepe cakes, panna cotta, macarons, tarts and eventually espresso-based beverages.

“One of the main reasons why I decided to open up a brick-and-mortar is because our customers have given me enough confidence that it’s time to move on to the next stage,” said owner Anthony Tam, a Sunnyvale resident who grew up in Malaysia.

Tam learned the art of crepe cake making from his brother, who used to own a crepe cake business in Malaysia. In 2005, Tam moved to Michigan for college and worked in supply chain management, moving to the Bay Area in 2012 for a job.

“At that time, (crepe cakes) weren’t a very popular product in the Bay Area, and I decided to give it a try,” he said.

But balancing his full-time job and his cake business wasn’t easy. Tam said that six months into starting Anton, he would work at the office during the day, take meetings at home at night, work on Anton from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m., sleep for a few hours and repeat the cycle.

“That process was very straining, and I knew I had to make a decision, otherwise my day job and the business was going to suffer,” he said.

So Tam quit his day job and went full time on Anton, partnering with 18 coffee shops, bakeries and restaurants to function as pick-up locations and building an Instagram following of 22,500. Tam offers a new flavor of crepe cake each month, in addition to six signature flavors ($12 a slice and $98 for a whole cake). Signature flavors include tiramisu, pistachio and more, but his favorite is the Hokkaido milk crepe cake.

“It’s really milky and has a hint of coconut flavor,” he said. “The moment when you eat it, it melts in your mouth right away, and it makes you crave for the second bite.”

From Oct. 2 to Oct. 31, Anton is offering 20% off all items, both in-store and online, as well as a free mango panna cotta for signing up for Anton’s loyalty program.
