Kiwanis Club marks century of local service

The Mountain View City Council honored the Kiwanis Club of Mountain View on June 23 with a proclamation recognizing the organization for 100 years of service to the community.

Founded in 1926, the club and its foundation have supported local families, schools and nonprofits through grants, scholarships, youth programs and service projects. Over the years, the foundation has provided more than $4 million in charitable support, according to a club press release.

“The Kiwanis Club of Mountain View continues to bring together civic-minded volunteers dedicated to improving the community and creating opportunities for future generations through service, leadership and fellowship,” Mayor Emily Ann Ramos said at the June 23 City Council meeting.

The club plans to host its 100th anniversary gala at 6 p.m. Aug. 8 at Don Giovanni restaurant in downtown Mountain View. Tickets are $80. For more information, visit kiwanismountainview.org or email info@kiwanismountainview.org.

Hope’s Corner volunteers receive CBS Bay Area ICON Award

Longtime Los Altos residents Leslie Carmichael and Bob Lee recently received CBS News Bay Area’s ICON Award for their years of service with Hope’s Corner, a Mountain View-based nonprofit that provides meals, showers, laundry services and other support for unhoused and low-income individuals.

Carmichael and Lee have been involved with Hope’s Corner for nearly 15 years. The two helped lead the organization during its early years, with Carmichael serving as the original chair/president and Lee as treasurer. Carmichael is once again currently president of the nonprofit’s board. She credited the organization’s success to those who have worked with them over the years.

“We are very honored,” Carmichael said in a statement. “But so many others have made and continue to make amazing contributions of their time and talents.”

Hope’s Corner, which operates out of Trinity United Methodist Church in downtown Mountain View, grew from serving 3,300 meals in 2012 to more than 69,000 hot meals and 12,000 lunch bags in 2025, according to an announcement from Hope’s Corner.
