Police continue to search for whoever tried — and luckily failed — to kidnap a 13-year-old girl on Mariposa Avenue in downtown Mountain View early this month.

According to police spokesman Jim Bennett, the girl was walking in the 200 block of Mariposa on the afternoon of Feb. 1 when she was approached by a man in a car who asked her for directions. He then got out, grabbed her and dragged her to his car.

After a struggle, the girl was able to escape the car and flee while yelling for help.

Police said they are looking for a short Hispanic male in his 30s, just over 5 feet tall and 140 to 160 pounds, with a mustache and black hair. He was seen wearing a black T-shirt with white lettering and had a Spanish accent.

The girl said the man drove a 1990s yellow four-door vehicle, with tinted windows, a Mexican-flag seat cover over the front seats, a “Chihuahua dog” bobble head on the dashboard and a 6-inch scratch on the driver’s side door.

Bennett commended the girl for her resourcefulness and her detailed description of the suspect and vehicle, saying that “we have no reason to question this incident at this point.”

Bennett said that parents “should encourage their children to walk in groups” and “should know what route they’re taking.”

Anyone with information on the incident or suspect is asked to call the Mountain View Police Department at (650) 903-6344.
