Volunteers wanted for bike/ped survey

With Bike to Work Day approaching May 18, Mountain View is seeking volunteers to help gauge the value of recent bicycle and pedestrian improvements and where to focus future efforts. The city’s bicycle/pedestrian advisory committee is looking for English-speaking residents who can spend at least two to three hours per week in May monitoring bicycle and pedestrian activity in assigned areas of the city.

Contact Rae Blasquez with the city’s volunteer services offices at 903-6607 to schedule a one-hour training session

Bike to Work Day information — including contests, routes, tips for taking your bike on transit, and ways to locate a bike buddy — can be found at www.511.org.

Save The Bay targets runoff pollution

Households, not big businesses, are the source of the majority of the pollution flowing into San Francisco Bay. A new campaign by Save The Bay is aiming to rectify that, educating people about how the everyday decisions they make affect the Bay.

Medicine flushed down the drain, cars hosed off in their owners driveways, fertilizer in gardens and pesticides on lawns, even pet wastes, “all adds up to massive amounts of pollution that’s going into the Bay,” said Felicia Madsen, policy director for Save The Bay.

The Oakland-based group is inviting residents to take a survey and rate themselves at www.keepitclean.org.

Water district warns of flood danger

Heavy rains continue to fill up the county’s reservoirs, and Santa Clara Valley Water District officials are predicting that most will be spilling into local creeks by early next week. Though the creeks are not expected to flood, district spokesperson Mike DiMarco says they can still pose a danger to people who are not careful around them.

In a press release, DiMarco said local residents should heed the following advice: Stay away from the fast-moving water in the creeks; never drive through flowing water, as one foot of running water can lift a car and two feet will sweep away almost any vehicle; don’t sightsee in rising water; and don’t enter areas blocked off by local authorities.
