Fifteen school districts and educational programs in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties will receive $1.1 million in grants from the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, the foundation announced Monday, March 7.
The funds will support training and development for local math teachers in hope of bridging the “achievement gap” between students in socio-economically disadvantaged areas and their peers in more affluent communities.
“California’s students are scoring far below other states and other nations and we need more well trained, effective mathematics teachers if we are going to change that,” foundation president Emmett D. Carson stated in a press release.
The Krause Center’s Faculty Academy for Mathematics Excellence at Foothill College will receive $99,200 for its development program for middle-school math teachers.
“Shrinking and shifting school budgets have meant severe reductions in professional development and coaching resources,” Gina Dalma, the foundation’s education-program officer, stated in the release.
She added that the programs funded are providing educators with instruction they wouldn’t have otherwise received.
