A construction crew punctured a gas line along El Camino Real in Mountain View Thursday morning, leading to a brief evacuation and blocking traffic in both directions, according to a statement by the Mountain View Fire Department.
The gas line rupture was reported at 9:13 a.m. Dec. 12 at 2700 W. El Camino Real, where a five-story apartment project is currently under construction. Fire department officials say the leak was caused when a backhoe digging a trench at the location punctured a 1-inch line — just inches away from a 4-inch supply line.
A total of 40 people were evacuated from the construction site and neighboring Lozano car wash. Westbound traffic was blocked while PG&E crews placed a clamp on the broken line. Police reported at 9:40 a.m. that lanes in both directions were closed.
The department determined the site was safe at 10:07 a.m. There were no reported injuries.
