The California Highway Patrol reported one death early Thursday morning on U.S. Highway 101 in Mountain View, the result of a suspected drunken driving crash.

At about 3:50 a.m. Aug. 10, a black Ford Edge carrying three men crashed into a concrete wall divide on the southbound lane of Highway 101 in the direction of the southbound high-occupancy vehicle off-ramp for state Highway 85. A Hispanic man in the front passenger seat was fatally injured, according to CHP Officer Art Montiel.
The victim had been described in initial reports as a woman.
The car’s driver, a 23-year-old San Jose man, is suspected of driving under the influence, Montiel said. He had injuries not considered life-threatening and was taken to Santa Clara Valley Medical Hospital. CHP is awaiting medical clearance before transporting him to jail, Montiel said.
The third passenger was identified as a 25-year-old San Pablo man.
The high-occupancy vehicle off-ramp was blocked due to the collision. CHP officials said a southbound express lane of Highway 85 and a southbound lane on Highway 101 remained closed hours after the crash, and reopened at 9:09 a.m.
The identity of the crash victim can not yet be released, pending notification of next of kin, according to the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s office.
Bay City News Service contributed to this report.

I’m not sure it was necessary to include that the driver was a Hispanic man. What value is this intended to add? Other that reinforcing the idea that Hispanic drivers drive drunk and crash cars.
Oh, it was a passenger looks like. My comment still stands as intended, however.
Not an idea. A fact.
Compared to non-Latino Whites, Latinos have consistently had a higher prevalence of being involved in alcohol-related crashes—42% of fatally injured Latino drivers, compared to 29% of White drivers, have blood alcohol content (BAC) levels over 0.08 g/dL [3].
@bkengland As soon as the coroner releases the victim’s information, we will replace the description released by the CHP with his name. Also, the driver is suspected of drunken driving, not convicted, and must be considered innocent until proven guilty.
