A vacant single-family home in Mountain View sustained an estimated $10,000 in damage Friday evening after a renovation mishap sparked a patio fire, according to the Mountain View Fire Department.
Firefighters responded to the 400 block of Sylvan Avenue after a 911 caller reported flames coming from a single-story home at 6:37 p.m. May 8. Crews arrived five minutes later and found an active fire on the patio of the residence, according to a fire department press release.
Firefighters extinguished the flames with a fire attack hose line, preventing the blaze from further spreading into the home. No injuries were reported, the press release said.
The Mountain View Police Department provided traffic control for about an hour while fire crews worked.
Fire officials determined the fire began on an interior window ledge in the patio area and was accidental. The building was turned over to the homeowner before crews left.
In the press release, the Mountain View Fire Department included recommendations on how to avoid home renovation fires. The advice included storing paints and other flammable liquids in cool, detached areas and never piling oily rags together. Instead, rags should be laid flat outside to dry or submerged in water, then sealed in a metal container.
