A small plane ran off the runway at Palo Alto Airport on Saturday afternoon, drifting into the Baylands Nature Preserve and prompting a fire department response.

No injuries were reported in the incident and there was no fire or other immediate danger, said Palo Alto Fire Department Deputy Chief Steve Lindsey on Saturday evening, after the inbound plane coming in for its landing ended up past the runway and in the water.

Lindsey said the two people onboard the small plane, a Beechcraft Baron, were able to get out and did not have any injuries.

The incident prompted a temporary closure of the runway and the adjacent Baylands on Saturday as the fire department dispatched three fire engines, a ladder truck, an ambulance and a battalion chief at around 3 p.m. The cause of the crash is still under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration, according to an update posted by the city on Saturday night.

While there is no indication of missing fuel having leaked out of the plane, there were initial reports of a possible sheen in the water, prompting the fire department to call in a support team from Mountain View to address a potential hazmat situation, Lindsey said.

The city’s release says containment booms were set up on Saturday and will remain as the site is further inspected.

The fire department successfully removed the plane by Saturday night, and both the airport and Baylands have reopened.
