I have a recent history of maladies hitting me right on the cusp of summer. This year? Time for my first broken bone. Considering all the times I’ve ever run into the legs of bed frames and tables, accidentally hitting my pinky toe against the legs of folding chairs stacked against the wall is not a particularly surprising way for me to earn my first broken bone days before my birthday. What I didn’t expect was how long I’d be advised to take it easy with walking. Suddenly, my visions of long oceanside strolls during Bay Area heat waves or shady redwood grove hikes this summer were put on the back burner.

In spite of my misstep, I’m still looking forward to the unofficial start of summer this weekend and all the traditions that accompany the season on the Peninsula, like movies under the stars, art and music festivals and al fresco dining in warm night air. Find a roundup of events between now and the end of June to help you plan the beginning of your (hopefully malady-free) summer.
