Eyes on the pies: This high schooler is baking pies for charity

I used to hate Key lime pie. But that’s because whenever I saw a green pie, I assumed it was grasshopper pie, which is, in my opinion, one of the worst desserts ever invented. As I grew older and learned that Key lime pie and grasshopper pie are two distinct desserts, I learned that I actually loved Key lime pie. 

Back in January when I first became the Peninsula Foodist, a reader reached out telling me that there’s a Palo Alto High School student who bakes and sells Key lime pies to raise money for the Ecumenical Hunger Program in East Palo Alto. Now, four months later, we’re excited to share his story with you. 

On another note…a cat cafe is coming to Santa Clara! I talked with Nabi Cat Cafe owners Christine Hedeen and Ailee Kim to learn more about their opening plans. And if you love sushi, there’s a new spot at Stanford Shopping Center.

‘That heart for serving’: Palo Alto family supports local nonprofit by baking tasty treats

For Palo Alto high schooler Tyler Wong, a long-running hobby has become a rewarding – and tasty – community service project. During the first summer of the pandemic, Tyler, an incoming freshman at the time, was inspired to use his passion for baking to benefit more than just the friends and family lucky enough to sample his pies, cookies and cakes over the years.

Santa Clara is getting a cat cafe, a new Palo Alto sushi spot and a ‘Star Wars’-themed party

  • Cat lovers, listen up. A cat cafe is coming to Santa Clara late summer or early fall.
  • Find sushi rolls with nontraditional ingredients like white truffle pesto and popcorn shrimp tempura at new contemporary Japanese restaurant Sushi Roku in Palo Alto.
  • May the fourth be with you…Blue Oak Brewing Company in San Carlos is hosting a “Star Wars”-themed party (with a costume contest!) on Saturday from 6-9 p.m.
  • More interested in puppies than “Star Wars”? Taplands in Santa Clara is hosting a Puppies and Pints event with CalPaws K9 Rescue Saturday at 1 p.m.
  • Sun’s out, brews out. Half Moon Bay Brewing Company has opened its extended patio with ample seating and fire pits.
  • Coco S’more, a concept selling cubed ice cream coated in toasted marshmallow, is coming to Sunnyvale this summer.
  • A new California law is banning service fees beginning July 1, so you may see menu prices begin to rise to reflect the missing surcharges. 
  • Keith’s Chicken-N-Waffles in South San Francisco announced its closure in a recent Instagram post, citing low sales, staffing issues and inflation.

Truffle hot chicken sandwich from Konjoe Burger

It’s been about a year since Konjoe Burger opened at State Street Market in Los Altos, and about a year since I last ate there (I remember thinking the burger I ordered was good but nothing phenomenal.) I decided I’d give it a revisit now that it’s a bit more established. 

I ordered the truffle hot chicken sandwich ($19.50), made with Mochiko fried chicken thigh, Korean-inspired hot chicken spices, Sonoma Brinery pickles, kimchi slaw, truffle spread and homemade ranch on a toasted potato roll. 

This sandwich was fantastic. The chicken was tender and super crispy but not bready, which often is where chicken sandwiches fall short in my opinion. The Mochiko batter created an almost tempura-like crunch. The spice level was just enough to make my nose begin to slightly run, but not overwhelmingly spicy where I couldn’t taste the other flavors in the sandwich. The pickles and the kimchi slaw added a bright acidity to cut through the richness of the fried chicken, and the truffle spread added a unique umami punch. I absolutely would go back to State Street Market to order this again.
