Volunteer for Compassion Week

Compassion Week, an annual week-long event that helps people in need, is looking for volunteers.

This year, Compassion Week runs Oct. 4-12, and is offering more than 100 service projects that volunteers can choose from to support local organizations. The event is open to people of all ages and abilities and offers a wide range of service and learning opportunities that can be done on-site or at home.

Last year, more than 4,100 volunteers completed nearly 200 projects with 67 community-based organizations, according to Jonah Shulman, local event program coordinator. Volunteers focused on issues like food insecurity, homelessness, teen and senior mental health, environmental protection, educational disparities and veterans.

Volunteer registration opens in September. More information about Compassion Week is available online, compassionweeklosaltos.org.

Donate to breast milk bank

In recognition of National Breastfeeding Awareness Month, El Camino Health in Mountain View is holding a virtual milk drive for the month of August.

The campaign is part of Mothers’ Milk Bank California, a nonprofit that has been providing screened, donated human milk to vulnerable infants since 1974.

“Donor milk is a vital part of the breastfeeding support ecosystem – especially for babies in neonatal intensive care units who may not have access to their mother’s milk,” said Jennifer Benito-Kowalski, chief executive officer of Mothers’ Milk Bank California, in an August press release.

The nonprofit collects, pasteurizes and distributes donor milk to hospitals and outpatient families, according to the press release.

More information about Mother’s Milk Bank California and the registration and screening process for milk donors is available at mothersmilk.org.
