The Los Altos High School football team finally got into action Friday night and took a 13-0 lead over Independence, only to have the game called with six minutes left in the second quarter when the AQI at Independence was deemed too high to safely continue playing.
It was the first contact for the Los Altos team, which had its scrimmage canceled due to being in covid protocol.
And the Eagles’ home opener, scheduled for this Thursday against San Lorenzo Valley, has been rescheduled for Saturday because SLV has players in covid protocol.

Los Altos enjoyed the experience of playing football, while it lasted.
“The offense executed real well,” coach Dave DeGeronimo said.”We had a fourth-down stop, went down and scored, and I felt like we were taking control.”
Cole Rafferty scored both Los Altos touchdowns on passes from sophomore quarterback Jimmy Flynn.
Now the Eagles will wait to see if the game with San Lorenzo Valley can go on this week at all.
DeGeronimo, also a teacher at Greene Middle School in Palo Alto, explained that after contact with someone who is covid positive, a vaccinated student-athlete can continue going to school, but must sit out from extra curricular activities for five days before being tested for covid. Then, if covid negative, sit out two more days before returning to the team. An unvaccinated player has to sit out 10 days before a covid test. So SLV might or might not be ready to play by Saturday.
“There are so many rules it’s not even funny,” DeGeronimo said. “I might be looking for a game.”
