Jackson Steffen passed for a touchdown and ran for two others in helping Mountain View open its SCVAL De Anza Division football schedule with a 41-7 victory at home over Milpitas on Friday night.
Min Kant rushed for 113 yards and scored a touchdown as the Spartans (4-1, 1-0) ran for over 300 yards. Leo Navarro also returned to the lineup, though his carries were limited.
Mountain View has developed a cadre of runners and Arturo Hernandez is the latest. He needed three carries to rush for 90 yards, including a long touchdown run when the Spartans were trying to run out the clock.
Steffen rushed for 66 yards and threw for 100 yards. On one scoring drive, he ran the ball on five consecutive downs, which included two runs of 15 yards or better, before winding up sneaking the ball over the goal line.
Milpitas (1-4, 0-1) threatened a few times, driving deep in Spartans territory. Mountain View recovered a fumble, stopped the Trojans on downs and intercepted a pass in the end zone to prevent Milpitas from adding on.
The Trojans scored their only touchdown when they fell on a fumble in the end zone the play after fumbling it away on MV’s 4-yard line.
Mountain View has a bye this week and stays at home for a game against Santa Clara on Oct. 8.
Hillsdale 20, Sacred Heart Prep 13

Despite all the miscues, Sacred Heart Prep put itself in position to tie or win in Friday’s non-league game at Hillsdale.
With the score tied late in the fourth quarter, SHP’s defense stopped Hillsdale, forcing a punt. Unfortunately, the Fighting Knights (4-1) recovered a fumble on the play and went on to score the winning touchdown.
The Gators (1-3) took the ensuing kickoff and drove deep into Hillsdale territory, with the key play a 35-yard pass from Jack Herrell to Luke Renert, giving SHP possession on the Knights’ five.
On the game’s final play, a pass into the end zone fell incomplete.
The Gators did all their scoring in the second quarter. Luis Mendoza scored on a two-yard run and Herrell hit Carter Shaw with a 26-yard touchdown pass. Sean Tinsley’s PAT tied it at 13-13 heading into halftime.
Sacred Heart Prep opens PAL Bay Division play at Burlingame on Friday night.
