Palo Alto boys basketball coach Jeff LeMere had to be happy with the way his team played defense in a season opener Tuesday night.
The Vikings played in-your-face defense and didn’t allow a lot of good looks in a 56-25 non-league victory over visiting Overfelt.
Palo Alto allowed 12 points through three quarters before emptying the bench.
Paly scored the game’s first nine points and never looked back. Lucas Black scored eight of his 10 points in the first quarter.
Sebastian Chancellor scored 11 points, which included a trio of 3-pointers, to lead Palo Alto.
Brody Simison scored seven points playing the final five minutes.
Palo Alto hosts Woodside in a non-league at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
Gunn won its third straight to open the season, beating host Mission San Jose 64-21 in a non-league contest.
Sophomore James Ford hit four 3-pointers as part of a 24-point effort. Jake Hakeman scored 16 and Sam Mulkey added 13 points.
Gunn plays Bellarmine on Thursday at 6 p.m. in the opening round of the Cupertino Tournament.
Pinewood raced past visiting Design Tech 79-36 in another non-league game.
Pinewood outscored Design Tech 20-9 in the third quarter as Andrew McDowell and Jaden Norwood combined for all 20 points. McDowell scored 24 points in the second half alone.
In another game, St. Francis beat host Wilcox, 82-48.
Girls basketball
Natalie Holm scored six points and Los Altos beat host Piedmont Hills 26-18 in a non-league game on Tuesday.
Maggie Byrne scored just before halftime to put Los Altos ahead to stay.
The Eagles host Presentation at 3:15 p.m. Thursday.
In another game, Castilleja beat Nueva 38-20.
