Palo Alto scored early and visiting Gunn scored late in a 1-1 tie Friday night as the teams opened Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division girls soccer play.

Gunn (5-0-2, 0-0-1) and Palo Alto (2-3-2, 0-0-1) also tied during the Firebird Classic last weekend. The teams meet again on the final day of regular season in February.

Paly opened the scoring with a shot through traffic against the flow of play midway through the first half.

Gunn came close to tying several times and finally equalized in the second half when sophomore Parker Vale delivered a long shot that careened off the inside of the far post.

Mountain View opened SCVAL play with a 1-0 victory over visiting Los Altos in another rivalry game.

Abby Westcott connected on a free kick in the 65th minute for the game winner.

Goalie Lauren Sharkey and defender Kate Stone were instrumental in keeping Los Altos out of the net.
