Palo Alto’s Elle Jauregui and Menlo-Atherton’s Alexia Bensoussan each reached the championship match of their respective divisions Saturday at the MidCals wrestling tournament in Gilroy.
Bensoussan, who won the Central Coast Section title at 121 in 2020, was decisioned by Central Catholic’s Janida Garcia in the title bout at 131.
Jauregui, who placed fifth in the CCS at 121, was decisioned by Gilroy’s Jennifer Soto, 3-0, in the championship at 126.
M-A’s Alex Lujan finished second in the 170 round robins, while Woodside’s Brynn Adasiewicz was fourth. M-A’s Alia Vunipola placed third at 189.
Menlo-Atherton also had four wrestlers competing for third place, with Gwen Tomkins pinning teammate Chyna Crawford at 2:14 in the 106 division and Anna Younes earning a 4-1 decision over McQueen’s Gigi Garcia at 121. Zoe Sehnder placed fourth at 150.
Kayla Melcher gave Menlo-Atherton a fifth-place finish when she pinned Pioneer Valley’s Jazmin Ramirez at 4:46.
Kiely Tabaldo, who helped California win the Junior National Dual Championships in Tulsa over the summer and who won the CCS title at 111 for M-A, finished sixth at 111. M-A’s Quinn Follmer was sixth at 101 and Palo Alto’s Aniah Latu was sixth at 160.
M-A’s Lily Martin finished seventh at 143.

On the boys side, Palo Alto’s Cade Creighton placed third at 182, pinning Vacaville’s Francisco Ochoa in 2:15. He fell to Clovis’ Tyler Hodges 3-0 in the semifinals.
Paly’s Max Felter placed seventh at 170 with a technical fall over Napa’s Nathan Schwarz, 20-5, in the third period.
Felter advanced to the seventh-place match with a major decision over Menlo-Atherton’s Mateo Sanchez in the consolation round of 8.
Other locals to reach the consolation round of 8 include St. Francis’ Tristan Joseph at 152, St. Francis Ryan Lee at 182 and St. Francis Roman Miele at 220.
Paly’s Philip Santiago at 126 and M-A’s Matthew Philbin at 182 reached the quarterfinal round.
Mountain View 45, Milpitas 33
Despite a makeshift lineup, the Mountain View wrestling team still managed to beat host Milpitas in a Santa Clara Valley Athletic League El Camino Division match Saturday, which was rescheduled from Jan. 11.
Several wrestlers went up a weight class to cover for some absences, making each bout that much more important.
Pins from Andrew Nguyen at 126, Rohan Kumar at 113, Landon Akin at 106, Calvin Conway at 220, Bobby Swidler at 182 and Jack Hecht at 170 played a big role in the Spartans’ victory.
Mountain View is 3-0 in league play and with its rival match with Los Altos twpo weeks away.
