A section of El Camino Real that has been closed to traffic for over a month due to a Christmas Day fire reopened this morning, Feb. 12, just in time for the commuter rush hour.
The eastbound portion of El Camino Real, between San Antonio Road and Sherwood Avenue, has been blocked off to vehicles, bikes and pedestrians since Dec. 25.
On Christmas morning, a fire ripped through a Los Altos shopping center located at 4600 El Camino Real. The burnt-out building was deemed a safety hazard to passing vehicles, which prompted the one-block lane closure.
The road was initially expected to reopen in January, but the timeline was pushed back until fire officials could go inside the building to investigate the cause of the blaze. They were not able to go inside, however, until the second floor of the building was demolished, making it safe for investigators to enter.
The origin and cause of the fire are still under investigation, according to a statement from the Santa Clara County Fire Department.
While El Camino Real has reopened to traffic, the bicycle and pedestrian sidewalk is still closed, according to the city of Los Altos.
