Day Worker Center of Mountain View to host open house

The Day Worker Center of Mountain View is hosting an open house from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, June 30, at their headquarters, located at 113 Escuela Ave.

The non-profit organization was founded in 1996 and matches day laborers with employers, as well as offering education, job skills training, and legal and medical services.

The open house is being co-sponsored by the city of Mountain View and Leadership Mountain View, and will provide an opportunity for the community to learn about the Day Worker Center’s mission and impact, according to a Day Worker Center press release.

Final City Council meeting before summer break set for Tuesday, June 25

The Mountain View City Council is scheduled to host its final regular meeting before the typical summer break on Tuesday, June 25, with the open session starting at 6:30 p.m.

The agenda includes a number of major items and budget decisions, including:

  • Revenue Measure: Proposal for ballot measure to increase the city’s property transfer tax 
  • Budget Approval: Last chance to weigh in on adoption of Fiscal Year 2024-2025 Budget
  • Rate Increases: Public hearing on rate increases for water, wastewater, trash, recycling and organics
  • Climate Strategy: Proposed updates to building reach codes
  • Union Contracts: Contract agreements for city employees that includes firefighters, police officers, EAGLES, service employees, unrepresented employees and hourly employees

The meeting will be held City Hall, 500 Castro St. in the council chambers. Members of the public can attend in person or watch online. Public comment will be accepted both in person and on Zoom.

Mountain View library offers reading and writing lessons for adults

The Mountain View Public Library is offering a free, one-on-one tutoring program to help adults build reading and writing skills.

The Learners Program provides weekly, individual tutoring to English speaking adults with low literacy skills. The program is currently recruiting both students and tutors.

Prospective learners need to be Mountain View residents who are at least 18 years old, not currently enrolled in high school or another degree program and able to complete an intake interview in English.

Prospective tutors need to be at least 18 years old, able to read, write and speak proficiently in English, and willing to commit to tutoring for at least six months. Volunteers will complete about ten hours of training and undergo a background check. Teaching or tutoring experience is not required.
