With local high schools holding their commencement ceremonies this week, the Voice wanted to hear from graduating seniors about what their high school experience has been like.

Below is a Q&A interview with Mountain View High senior Rubi Rivas Menjivar, who reflected on her experience at the school. Answers have been edited for style and clarity.

What is your favorite memory from high school?

One of my favorite memories from high school has been attending the school plays. The first one I went to was “The Little Shop of Horrors” during my freshman year, and I ABSOLUTELY loved it. I remember sitting in the crowd of audience members and just being amazed to the point where I didn’t realize how much time had passed! The main leads were upperclassmen, and I admired them as they performed on stage because of their display of talent, confidence and involvement in the arts.

What’s a word that describes your senior year?

I would describe my senior year as “nostalgic.” This year I saw a lot of the freshmen and sophomores and thought about how they are barely starting their high school journey while mine is coming to an end. At times, I would picture myself back in my old classes and even remember the thoughts I had, such as, “I bet I’m not going to feel the days pass by and soon the school year will be over” or “I wonder which classmates I’m going to meet and become close with.” I feel even more nostalgic this year when looking back at photos or when people mention a certain moment that I had completely forgotten about!

What song defines your senior year?

I believe “Slow Down” by Mac Ayres would be the song that best describes my senior year. I made managing my classes easier by choosing the ones that I knew I could handle. I chose the ones that would allow me to spend time on other programs as well. I have learned that I should stop doing homework at a certain time, because if I don’t get enough sleep, then I won’t be able to perform my best for the next school day. Noticing that, it wouldn’t have seemed worth prioritizing my work over rest because, in some classes, I would struggle to stay awake and focused. Overall, I have come to understand that my life doesn’t revolve around school and that I should spend more of my time doing the things that I enjoy.

Which class do you think prepared you most for life after high school?

I know that my AVID class has prepared me the most for life after high school, especially since I received four years worth of lessons and teachings. My teachers helped me develop stronger reading, communication and writing skills. AVID also taught me about the importance of financial literacy, organization of tasks and items, as well as collaboration and problem-solving.

Finish this sentence: “In 10 years I’m going to be…”

In 10 years I’m going to be visiting many new and unfamiliar places. I would like to go on multiple road trips and acknowledge the beautiful views along the way to my destination. I also picture myself remaining in California and working with people who I could become close friends with. I can’t predict or say with certainty what career I’m going to have, but I want to ensure that I have a good work environment.

What’s the top piece of advice that you would give to incoming high schoolers?

The top piece of advice that I would give to incoming high schoolers is to attend a variety of school events. There are multiple things to go to such as sports and dance performances, which could influence students to join them. Incoming high schoolers also shouldn’t be afraid of attending these events alone because they are most likely going to meet and talk to people who could become their friends.

What are you most proud of accomplishing or overcoming in high school?

I’m most proud of accomplishing all of the things that led to me being selected as the Student of the Month for December. I appreciate that my school recognized me for who I am and how I do things, and also, for the support and encouragement I received from others.

Mountain View High’s commencement ceremony is scheduled for Friday evening, June 5. Check back on Saturday for coverage of the ceremony, along with a list of the graduates.
