On Saturday, April 13, the Mountain View Fire Department responded to a hazardous materials incident at 12:49 a.m at a multi-family residence in the 2700 block of W. El Camino Real, according to a press release by MVFD. No individuals were harmed by the substance.

A 911 call reported an envelope that contained one Scrabble letter and white residue. The contents of the envelope caused one person to feel nauseous.

The Mountain View Police Department arrived to escort occupants of the residence to the building’s lobby, put the envelope in a box and placed it outside the building.

Firefighters arrived at 12:56 a.m and MVPD closed Del Medio Avenue and the number three lane of W. El Camino Real for close to two hours while the fire unit was on the scene.

The Hazardous Materials unit established isolation zones to protect the public and first responders for contamination. Tests conducted on the substance determined the contents to be ephedrine, an over the counter medication often used to treat asthma. Results revealed inconclusive for hazardous material.

One individual was medically treated by MVFD on the scene and was not transported to the hospital. Occupants of the unit returned to their residence.

  1. Please clarify: ephedrine is a common medication for respiratory illnesses not asthma but probably a more common ingredient for cooking meth if found in a large quantity. It would be helpful to have more details in this story.
