David Luenberger, 88, of Stanford, who was born in Los Angeles, who received a master’s degree and a doctorate in electrical engineering from Sanford University, who conducted groundbreaking research in control theory, optimization, economics, information science and investment science, who was one of the co-founders of the university’s Department of Engineering-Economic Systems, who authored six books and was an honorary professor at several international universities, who was an accomplished magician, and who loved playing jazz piano, skiing, body-surfing, writing short stories and taking photographs, died on May 19.
Brian Goncher, 69, of Palo Alto, who was born in Cleveland, who attended University of Chicago and later worked at the Wold Bank in Chicago, who then moved to Berkeley and worked in the corporate office of Bank of America, who relocated to the Bay Area in the 1990s and settled into a cottage in Woodside, who served as a financial consultant and became interested in the emerging field of clean energy, who established the National Clean Energy Practice at Deloitte in 2004 and helped to launch Winterfest, an annual gathering that focuses on sustainable energy, who later moved to Palo Alto and became a mentor to young people interested in jobs in clean energy, died on May 30.
Leanne Giles, 78, of Palo Alto, who was born in Provo, Utah, who spent a year in Tehran in the 1970s, who loved to travel with her family, who in 1992 went door to door in Palo Alto to raise money for disaster relief after Hurricane Iniki, who faithfully served her congregation, and who loved reading, completing puzzles and spending time with her children and grandchildren, died on June 2.
