A 30-year-old family-run taqueria is expanding to downtown Palo Alto.

La Corneta Taqueria, known for its affordable and extensive selection of burritos, plans to open its fifth location in late September, according to David Perez-Campos, the manager of La Corneta San Carlos and co-owner of La Corneta Palo Alto. Replacing SliderBar on University Avenue, La Corneta Taqueria’s newest location will have a similar menu and family-oriented ambiance to its other restaurants in San Francisco, Burlingame and San Carlos, he said.

“It will be almost the same as the other four locations: a taqueria with a line where the people can order a quick bite and just go, or they can sit at the bar and have a few margaritas and enjoy their day,” Perez-Campos said.

Joel Campos, the uncle of Perez-Campos, founded La Corneta in San Francisco in 1995, with the goal of offering “fresh and delicious food with good prices and service in a fast manner,” according to La Corneta’s website. The oldest of 12 siblings, Campos grew up in Jalisco, Mexico, and moved to San Francisco just five years before founding his taqueria. In 2000, he expanded his business with a second location in San Francisco. Then in 2007, he opened the Burlingame location, and three years later, another La Corneta in San Carlos.

The bestselling items on La Corneta’s menu are the burritos ($8.50-$17), Perez-Campos said. Guests can select from a myriad of proteins, including chicken mole, birria, beef tongue, grilled salmon, prawns and more. Choose from flour, whole wheat or spinach tortillas and black, whole or refried beans. And for those with a smaller appetite, baby burritos are available as well.

In addition to burritos, the menu boasts a variety of tacos, quesadillas, nachos and tostadas. Plate options include enchiladas, flautas, steak, spicy prawns, grilled tilapia with grilled vegetables and more ($11.75-$19). For dessert, find flan, tres leches cake and churros ($2.25-$4.85).

La Corneta touts itself as being vegetarian-friendly, offering slow-stewed tofu in red sauce in burritos or burrito bowls, mushroom quesadillas and combination plates with grilled vegetables, mushrooms, rice, beans and salad.

Similar to its other locations, the Palo Alto restaurant will have hand-painted murals on the walls. Expect seating for 49 inside, as well as limited outdoor seating.

Campos and Perez-Campos hope to continue to expand La Corneta throughout California. 

“We are thinking maybe in the future Mountain View, San Jose, Los Angeles,” Perez-Campos said. “We know that we are not the biggest … taqueria in California, but … we want to be the best taqueria in California.”
