A man was killed in Palo Alto on Wednesday night after the truck he was driving swerved off the roadway on San Antonio Road and collided with a tree, according to the police.

Police learned about the crash shortly before midnight. When officers and firefighters responded to the crash near the intersection of San Antonio Road and Alma Street, they saw the unconscious man in a pickup truck. Fire Department personnel extricated the man from his truck and transported him to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries, according to a news release from the Palo Alto Police Department.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the man was driving west on San Antonio when the truck left the roadway and hit a tree, according to a department news release. A witness reported seeing the truck swerving across numerous lanes before leaving the roadway.

The department’s Specialized Traffic Accident Reconstruction (STAR) team responded to investigate the scene of the crash. It was unclear Thursday morning what the cause of the crash was or whether drugs or alcohol were a factor.

The Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office did not have the man’s identity as of Thursday morning.
