The Palo Alto girls volleyball team got a huge game from Olivia Harrison to power past visiting Los Altos 25-18, 18-25, 25-17, 21-25, 15-12 in a SCVAL De Anza Division contest Tuesday night.
Harrison recorded four of her kills, including the game winner, and had a solo block in the fifth set alone.
Alison Xiang gave the Vikings (6-4, 2-0) a 6-1 edge in the deciding set with a kill. Los Altos fought back, with Carolyn Dormady’s ace tying it at 8-8 and a block from Leigh Doyas and Clara Graef putting the Eagles (6-5, 0-1) ahead.
After trading points, a kill from Amelia Vugrincic tied the set at 10-all and Hailey Callan recorded a kill to put Paly ahead.
The Vikings won four of the final five points, all on kills, including two from Harrison, one from Vugrincic and one from Thea Enache.
Dormady had a big game for Los Altos and made things difficult on Paly. Kaitlyn Cuppett and Megan Wong shared setting duties while Kaitlyn Lee served tough.
For Paly, Jess Watanabe was factor at libero and as a server.
The Vikings meet Castilleja in a nonleague match on Wednesday.
Gunn dropped a tough 25-21, 25-18, 18-25, 14-25, 15-11 decision to visiting Monta Vista.
Titan libero Micaela Leong had 28 digs and 17 assists. Kaylin Hallada recorded 11 kills. Sophia Hahn and Celine Safa combined for another 15 kills.
Sophie Yen recorded a kill to put Gunn ahead 4-1 in the fifth set. Monta Vista scored seven of the next eight points to take the lead. Hallada’s kill drew the Titans within 9-8 but they never closed the gap.
Gunn visits Los Altos on Thursday at 6:45pm, and will then compete in Menlo School’s Chandler Tournament on Saturday.
In another SCVAL match, Mountain View rebounded from its first loss of the season with a 25-18, 25-14, 25-15 victory over visiting Homestead.
In the PAL Bay Division, Anna Sokol recorded 13 kills to help Menlo-Atherton (6-6, 2-0) beat Carlmont 29-27, 25-22, 25-22. Woodside lost at home to Burlingame 25-18, 25-13, 25-13.
Senior outside hitter Simone Adam recorded 10 kills and Menlo School downed Presentation 25-15, 25-21, 25-16 in a nonleague match Tuesday at home.
Freshman Lily Kautai added eight kills and two aces for the Knights (11-5), who open West Bay Athletic League play against Mercy Burlingame at Serra in San Mateo on Thursday night.
Junior outside hitter Brooke Dombkowski had seven kills and a .700 hitting percentage and Cleo Hardin added seven kills for Menlo, which is 8-3 against teams from the Central Coast Section.
Senior setter Zoe Gregory had 27 assists while senior Hanna Hoffman recorded 18 assists and five kills. Hallie MacDonald contributed a team-best nine digs.
Sacred Heart Prep dismantled Riordan 25-11, 25-11, n/a, in another nonleague match on Tuesday. The Gator leaders were not available at press time but they were available for a 4-set win over Presentation earlier in the week.
Isabelle Marco had 14 kills, Millie Muir added 11 and both Tatum Baker and Mia Radeff contributed nine kills. Dani Parker had five blocks and Iris O’Connor had 15 digs. Elina Wheeler had nine digs.
Girls water polo
Gunn (1-1, 1-1) and Castilleja (4-3, 3-0) each won Tuesday in SCVAL De Anza Division games, making Gunn’s game Thursday at Los Gatos all the more important.
The Wildcats (4-0, 3-0), who shared second place with Castilleja last season, remains a prime title contender after toppling Mountain View.
The Titans beat visiting Harker 18-9 after opening a 9-1 advantage. Kenza Ashworth led Gunn with five goals. Sawyer McKenna and Nina Albers each added four and Siham Arsalane put in threee.
Seven different players scored in Castilleja’s 8-0 victory over host Homestead. Janet Meng scored twice and Sutchie Ofori-Nyako had 10 saves to preserve the shutout.
In the PAL Bay Division, Menlo-Atherton (4-0, 2-0) remained undefeated following a 21-2 pounding of host Carlmont.
Woodside dropped an 11-2 decision at Burlingame.
Girls golf
Palo Alto beat Gunn 217-237 in a league match at Baylands Golf Links on Tuesday as Lauren Sung earned medalist honors with a score of 35.
Gunn was led by Athina Chen, who scored a round of 40 with Alanna Lee and Namya Kasturi shooting 48 and 49 respectively.
Girls tennis
Gunn beat visiting Milpitas 5-2 as senior Elise Naddell played another dramatic match.
Naddell duplicated her match at No. 3 singles after playing on the No. 1 doubles Monday against SHP. She lost her first set, won a second set tie breaker, then won the 10-point tie breaker.
Gunn is 1-0 in league and 2-2 overall and plays at Los Gatos on Wednesday at 3:30pm.
Los Altos lost to Cupertino 4-3 in another match.
In the PAL Bay Division, Menlo-Atherton (6-2, 2-0) swept host Carlmont 7-0, getting singles wins from Ava Martin, Tessa Ellingson, Mara Williams and Lila Motamedi.
Woodside swept the doubles matches and got a key victory from Camila Jeung at No. 4 singles to edge Hillsdale 4-3.
After two matches, Woodside (2-1, 2-0) and M-A are the only unbeaten teams in league play.
In the PAL Ocean Division, Sequoia is one of three undefeated teams after beating host El Camino 7-0. MJ Hartman, Ciara Murman, Nora Wooley and Raquel Ladabaum each won their singles matches.
Boys water polo
Gunn beat visiting Harker 18-13 as Cole Vale scored six goals.
Wolfgang Edholm added four goals and Jordan Affeld added three.
Gunn plays Thursday at Los Gatos at 6:45 pm. The Titans are co-hosting the St. Francis Invitational on Friday and Saturday. They open against Jesuit at 1 pm Friday.
In another league match, Palo Alto beat Los Altos, 9-7, in overtime.
In the PAL Bay Division, Menlo-Atherton handled Carlmont 17-7 and Woodside throttled Burlingame 15-2 as Lukas Kleinheinz blocked a pair of penalty kicks.
Cross country
The Woodside boys and the Menlo-Atherton girls each won the first PAL Center Meet on Tuesday, hosted by Half Moon Bay on its 2.33 mile course.
The Wildcats beat second-place Mills 36-106 in the boys race, with Menlo-Atherton placing third (117) and Sequoia (134) fourth.
Individually, Woodside’s Ethan Brooks (12:04), Maxmilian Hohendorf (12:31) and Nayan Smuek (12:36) finished 2-3-4, followed by Sequoia’s Ethan Bae (12:38) and M-A’s Aidan Doherty (12:59).
In the girls race, M-A placed all seven of its runners among the top 11 and finished first with a perfect 15 points. Sequoia was 11th and Woodside ran an incomplete team.
Elle Marsyla gave Woodside some good news, winning the race in 14:25. The next six runners were all from M-A: Annie Pflaum, Tatum Olesen, Sofia Melani, Katriona Briggs, Katie Lorenz and Minna Krastev with times ranging from 14:41 to 15:20. Madeline Boyle placed 11th in 15:50.
