Los Altos fumbled the opening kickoff and had an interception nullified by a penalty in the first few minutes of Saturday’s non-league football game with San Lorenzo Valley.

That’s about all that went wrong as Los Altos regrouped in a hurry, smothering San Lorenzo Valley 40-6 with a defensive effort every bit as good as its offensive output.

Those early mistakes led to San Lorenzo Valley’s only touchdown of the game. Zach Fagin got things going in Los Altos favor by blowing through the line and blocking the extra point.

Afterward, there was no stopping the Eagles (6-2), who completed an experiment in scheduling with flying colors.

It was Los Altos’ third game in nine days and another short week is on the horizon as Lynbrook comes to town for a 7 p.m. contest Friday.

Thanks to Gunn’s victory over Cupertino on Thursday, Los Altos already knew it had the inside track to the SCVAL El Camino Division title. The Eagles are a game up on both Cupertino and Gunn, with a win in hand against the Titans, with two games left. The finale is at Cupertino on Nov. 5.

Fagin caught a 36-yard touchdown pass from Jimmy Flynn that tied the game and then caught a 48-yard scoring toss to put Los Altos ahead to stay. Those were the first two passes Flynn completed on the day and he only needed to attempt six all game.

That’s because Greg Schumann led a potent rushing attack. He gained 186 yards on 10 carries, scoring four touchdowns on runs of 21, 4, 61 and 70 yards.

There was no scoring in the second half with a running clock. Los Altos took a knee four straight times in the red zone rather than try to punch in an extra touchdown.

Nathaniel Guillory and Thomas Schumann combined for another 69 rushing yards and Flynn ended with 104 passing yards.

Thomas Schumann also recovered a fumble and Panz Trembois intercepted a pass. John O’Sullivan III and Fady Youssef were the most visible of a swarming defense that led to to double-digit tackles for a loss.

Los Altos won its fifth straight since losing two straight to De Anza Division opponents. The school also clinched its first winning season since 2016.

Los Altos somehow managed to fit two postponed games into a two-week time period that was supposed to be the Eagles bye week.

The way things are going, the Eagles are happy to just keep playing.
