Menlo School and Crystal Springs Uplands accounted for seven of the top 10 finishers in Friday’s West Bay Athletic League boys cross country finals at Crystal Springs.
The difference was Menlo’s Landon Pretre (15:28.4) and Justin Pretre (15:39.5) finishing 1-2 as the Knights recorded a thin 33-36 victory over CSUS over the 2.95 mile course.
The girls race was just as close, with Castilleja sweeping the top three places to help grab a 39-42 win over Sacred Heart Prep, which had four runners among the top eight.
Perry McElhinney won the race in 18:04.2, followed by Samira Kennedy in 18:15.9 and Daniella Henderson in 18:34.2.
The importance of all five scoring runners was evident in both races as Menlo freshman William Hauser placed 14th, holding off a pair of Harker runners by less than a second to retain the lead. CSUS placed all five scorers in the top 12, meaning there was no margin of error.

Castilleja freshman Zoe Lee finished 18th overall, a place behind Sacred Heart Prep freshman Avery Wagner as each school’s final scorer.
Menlo’s Aiden Deffner was seventh with a time of 16:39.5 and Nik Khuntia, the only senior among the top 20 finishers, was ninth in 16:56.2, less than a half-second ahead of SHP’s Nick Karros, who ran well enough to qualify for the Central Coast Section meet as an individual.
Priory, which finished third overall and had two runners among the top 10, also qualified for the CCS meet. Junior Levente Palvolgyi ran fifth in 15:52.3 and junior Evan Strohman was eighth in 16:52.0.
David Martinez led Eastside Prep’s group with a 28th place finish and Logan Thompson was Pinewood’s top runner, plaving36th.
Two of Sacred Heart Prep’s five scorerw are seniors. Lucy Paynter was sixth in 19:00.6, Janie Morganroth placed seventh in 19:18.6. Junior Julia Soderberry was fourth in 18:35.3 and freshman Sophie Cheung ran eighth in 20:12.6.
Senior Abigail Krenz was Castilleja’s fourth runner, placing 15th in 20:45.
Pinewood freshman Violette Negrette earned a spot in the CCS race, finishing 30rd overall in 21:39.5.
Third-place Menlo also extended its season, with senior Grace Tang’s ninth-place showing in 20:13.5 leading the pack. Freshman Eden Chuang was 14th for Menlo in 20:43.4.
Sophomore Stella Axe placed 13th in 20:39.6 for Priory, with freshman Willamena Bourke in 23rd with a time of 21:14.0, just ahead of Menlo senior Sophia Gallo.
Priory advanced as the third Division V team from the WBAL despite its ninth-place overall finish.
Sacred Heart Prep and Menlo enter Division IV and Castilleja competes in Division V.
Senior Alondra Zamora was Eastside Prep’s top runner.
The Peninsula Athletic League holds its league finals Saturday.
