Four girls volleyball teams from the Central Coast Section were included in the Open Division of the Northern California State Regional and three won Wednesday night with varying degrees of difficulty.
No. 8 seed St. Francis had to go on the road to play Northern California’s top-rated team Marin Catholic and returned home with an epic, five-set victory, 26-24, 26-28, 25-20, 15-25, 15-11.
St. Francis went on the road and upset No. 1 seed Marin Catholic on Wednesday night.
CCS champion Mitty, seeded second, won at home in five sets, 25-18, 25-19,17-25, 22-25, 15-12 over No. 7 Branson.
Sharon Nejad recorded a team-best 13 kills in helping No. 4 seed Menlo School sweep visiting No. 5 seed Clovis West 25-19, 25-22, 25-18.
(St. Ignatius fell to Lincoln 25-15, 25-11, 25-15)
As a result, Menlo (29-6) gets another home match and will host the Lancers (19-11) at 6 p.m. Saturday with a berth in the Regional finals at stake.
Four of Menlo’s six losses have been to Mitty (three times) and St. Francis. The Knights have won one of 12 sets played against those WCAL schools.
St. Francis lost to Marin Catholic in a tournament earlier in the season. That match was played without Madison Pietsch, who is heading for USC in the fall.
The Lancers ended Marin Catholic’s 15-match winning streak and handed the Wildcats (28-3) their first loss of the season at home.
Menlo owns a 12-1 record at home, with its only loss to St. Francis on Sept. 7.
In the three sets against Clovis West, the Knights fell behind twice, 7-6 and 8-7, both in the second set.
All three sets were close, with the largest lead of the evening the final score of the third set, courtesy of a Clovis West hitting error.
Whenever Clovis West rallied, the Knights found a way to strike back and maintain their advantage.
“I’m super proud of how we competed tonight, and that we earned ourselves another home match,” Menlo senior Hanna Hoffman said. “We played with heart which translated to our scrappiness, allowing us to keep a lot of balls alive.”
Nejad recorded her 13 kills on .619 hitting. Hoffman had 24 assists and senior Zoe Gregory added 21. Senior Simone Adam had 11 kills and a team-high 10 digs, and sophomore Cleo Hardin recorded 11 kills.
