Sequoia sophomore girls soccer midfielder Addison Haws was rewarded for making a long run, passing to a teammate in the penalty box and then getting into a supportive position.

As it turned out, Menlo-Atherton’s goalkeeper made a kick save, sending the ball back toward Haws, who was standing at the 10-yard line on M-A’s turf field.

She tried to kick the ball toward the front of the net but an M-A defender was in good position and got in the way.

Unfortunately for the Bears, the ball hit off the defender’s lower left arm and she was called for a handball.

Haws was given a penalty kick, she calmly sent the ball into the upper right corner of the net, and the goalie had no chance at it.

That turned out to be the lone goal in a beautifully played Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division match Thursday.

The scoring opportunity began in the back, with sophomore Aminah Evans winning a 50-50 ball and tapping it to senior Reese McKeon, who sent it to Haws.

Sequoia, who gave league-leading Woodside a terrific game earlier this week, has a good balance of experienced seniors and fundamentally sound sophomores and freshmen.

The Ravens (10-3-1, 3-2-1) reached the finals of the Central Coast Section Division II playoffs last season, losing to unbeaten Lincoln, 1-0.

They opened the season with wins over Sacred Heart Prep and South San Francisco. SHP currently leads the West Bay Athletic League and won CCS titles in 2019 and 2020. South SF is the defending CCS Division IV champion.

Sequoia opened the PAL season with a tie against M-A and then lost to Burlingame, a contender for the Open Division along with Woodside.

The Ravens play at Burlingame (11-2-1, 4-1-1) on Tuesday afternoon. Burlingame is coming off a 4-0 victory over Aragon after M-A played them to a scoreless tie last week.

Menlo-Atherton (4-5-5, 0-2-4), which has played in three of the six CCS Open Division tournaments, has seven shutouts on its resume and has allowed one goal in three other matches.

The Bears also have three one-goal losses — to Mountain View, Woodside and Sequoia.

Woodside (13-0, 5-0) rallied in the second half to beat host Hillsdale 2-1 and remain in the driver’s seat.

Elise Evans scored both goals for the Wildcats and Sofia Bellver-Eymann recorded both assists.

Wrestling

Mountain View recorded six pins, a technical fall and received six forfeits in beating Santa Clara 77-6 on Thursday.

Nate Wilson earned the fastest pin of the day, needing just 29 seconds to win at the 145-weight class.

Only one of the eight contested weight classes went into the third period and it was Santa Clara’s lone victory.

Rohan Kumar (113) gained his technical fall at the end of the second period. Landon Aikin (1-6), Bryan Moir (120), Jack Hecht (160), Alex Bocchieri (182) and Gavin Scafidi (195) also recorded pins.

Mountain View travels to Los Altos for a rivalry match at 6 p.m. Thursday.

In the Peninsula Athletic League Ocean Division, Sequoia beat Aragon 30-15 but its match with Woodside was postponed. Woodside’s match with Mills was also postponed.

Mayowa Otudeko-Carroll sank a pair of free throws to tie Sacred Heart Prep’s girls basketball game against Mercy Burlingame at 41 with just under a minute to play and Matilda Tangitau took care of the rest in SHP’s 45-41 win over Mercy in the Skyline Division on Thursday.

Sacred Heart Prep beat Mercy 45-41 in a WBAL game Thursday.
